Don’t force Technology on me! - Pat Obilor
The customer had exceeded her budget and ran out of cash but she don’t want to give up on the items in her shopping cart. The cashier advised to complete payment with her card, and she said, she’d prefer to go into the bank, withdraw what she needs and come back. But that the cashier should promise that her items will be intact till she gets back.
The cashier replied saying, she will try but after 30Mins, they will have to rearrange everything back on the shelf! The customer began to fume…
“what do you mean?’ I don’t have time to come back and start picking these items again!”
The cashier again emphasised that, she can pay with her card and that, it is safe and time effective to do so.
Then the customer uttered the word, “don’t force technology on me.”, and they went on an on until I offered to pay the balance since I was next in line to the elderly woman, and it was still within my budget. She thanked me, and left with her groceries while to cashier carried on taking payment from others on the queue.
As a digital champion advocate, I find this real life scenario rather interesting because these days, we all are clamouring for digital inclusivity and accessibility, and most organisations and businesses encourage clients/consumers to use various Avenues of digital convenience to make their money and time work for them.
While it is a great idea to fly with the tides of this tech age, there are still some people who are reluctant to jump on the wagon! Such as this customer in the story I just shared.
However, i learnt 3 things from this.
- Poeple don’t like to be told off, learn to Communicate their needs/yours without an attitude.
- Respect existing business policies or just stick with your budget.
- Let’s be tolerant of each other’s opinion and avoid telling poeple how to live their lives. Empathy is important.
- It is a customer service etiquette to smile or speak to people in calm friendly tones, this cashier kept a straight face all through the conversation, and I think that approach didn’t help the situation.
What would you add? And How do you think the cashier would have solved this problem better? What advice would you give to the customer who would rather not be digitally savvy, assuming she would listen to you…
Have a good week everyone and don’t forget to be kind today!💐
